I support #JuniorDoctors

I am proud to say that I have added my name to Early Day Motion 539, in support of junior doctors working across London.

Junior doctors are absolutely vital to the future of the NHS, and it is clear that if we want to move toward a seven-day NHS and improve patient care we need to ensure that the staff we rely on are supported, understood and valued. Junior doctors are the backbone of our NHS.

The Government’s approach is the wrong way forward: junior doctors shouldn’t be paid less for the work they do now. Alongside nurses and other staff, junior doctors already work incredibly hard, and we can’t remove the safeguards which prevent them having to work longer and more exhausting hours. Ultimately it will be patients who suffer if Jeremy Hunt ignores the concerns of front-line staff.

It’s also important we recruit and retain the very best staff in our NHS. As a result of London’s housing crisis, a third of Londoners are now considering leaving the capital because of soaring rents. As Mayor, my key priorities will be to bringing down the cost of housing in the capital and tackling low pay – yet Ministers continue to make life harder for young professionals in our city.

The Government’s approach to this issue is not only bad for junior doctors and the NHS, but bad for London
